The FIRE Movement: Complete Guide

What Is FIRE?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It's a movement focused on extreme savings and investment, allowing people to retire far earlier than traditional retirement age — often in their 30s or 40s.

The core principle is simple: save 50-70% of your income, invest it aggressively, and reach a portfolio size that can sustain your living expenses indefinitely through the 4% rule.

Types of FIRE

Lean FIRE

Living on $25,000–$40,000/year in retirement. Requires a portfolio of $625K–$1M. Emphasizes frugality and minimalism. Best for people comfortable with a simpler lifestyle.

Fat FIRE

Living on $100,000+/year in retirement. Requires $2.5M+ portfolio. Maintains a comfortable or luxurious lifestyle. Typically achieved by high earners or business owners.

Barista FIRE

Semi-retirement with a part-time job covering some expenses (and health insurance). Requires a smaller portfolio since you're still earning some income. A popular middle ground.

The FIRE Investment Strategy

Most FIRE adherents follow a simple investment approach: low-cost index funds (primarily S&P 500 or total stock market funds like VTI/VTSAX), tax-advantaged accounts maxed first (401k, Roth IRA, HSA), and a bond allocation that increases as you approach your FIRE date.

Common Criticisms and Rebuttals

"What about healthcare?"

ACA marketplace plans, Health Sharing Ministries, Barista FIRE (part-time work for benefits), and HSA accounts are common solutions. Healthcare costs are real but manageable with planning.

"What if the market crashes?"

FIRE plans typically include a 1-2 year cash buffer, flexible spending strategies (variable withdrawal rates), and the ability to generate some income if needed.
